Generally, BBQ food drums up images of hamburgers and hot dogs on big buns with all the toppings. There is nothing wrong with that image at all – Lord, knows I love a good burger. But it’s not as easy when you’re gluten-free. Premade burgers and hot dogs can sometimes have gluten (and preservatives and nitrates) not to mention finding the perfect gluten-free bun can be challenging. (Kinnickinnick hot dog buns are great though). So, we decided to do things a little different this time with a delicious gluten-free BBQ recipe roundup.
As we head into the second last long-weekend of summer 2022 (here in Canada) it seemed like a good time to update our BBQ round with a few more delicious BBQ dishes.
We imagined a big BBQ buffet style table or a neighbourhood potluck dinner or a big cookout when camping. A BBQ where the menu is on another level but not so much that it’s out of place in the great outdoors. These are just some tasty dishes that are perfect when eaten indoors but also make for a delicious gluten-free BBQ recipe roundup too.

Hi, my daughter is gluten intolerant so I’m always trying to look out for recipe for her. I love your site, but I’m wondering about something. Why would there be gluten in BBQ sauce, unless it’s used as a binding ingredient? Is BBQ sauce usually tomato paste based? Thank you for clarifying this for me.
Thank you for your kind words. We are honoured to be considered a resource for you and your daughter as you navigate through her new gluten-free world.
You are right in that many BBQ sauces don’t contain gluten, however there are many that do. Gluten can be contained in stabilizers, thickeners, and colouring agents. You might also find beer or soy sauce in some brands, which can contain gluten, as well. Also, a lot of BBQ sauces contain natural smoke flavoring, and barley malt flour can be used to produce this ingredient which contains gluten.
I hope this helps. Thank you once again.
