The Ultimate Gluten-Free Beauty Products Guide

Ultimate gluten-free beauty products guide

Depending on your level of sensitivity to gluten, gluten-free beauty products may or may not be a concern to you. For those living with Celiac disease – and those with a more severe sensitivity to gluten – gluten-free beauty products are a necessary consideration.

Luckily, the growing popularity of the gluten-free diet has spilled over into the beauty industry and beauty brands are becoming more and more aware of added gluten in beauty products. We, too, have recently become more aware so we looked into the types of gluten in beauty products, the risk factors, and which brands are gluten-free. We have combined what we’ve learned in this Ultimate Gluten-Free Beauty Products Guide.

Let’s start with the basics…

What gluten is in beauty products?

Beauty products sometimes contain gluten in the form of oils or extracts derived from wheat, barley, or rye as emollients. Some of the more common gluten-containing substances that are sometimes used in beauty products are:

  • wheat (Triticum vulgare);
  • barley (Hordeum vulgare);
  • rye (Secale cereal); and,
  • oat (Avena sativa).

What are the risk factors?

For the most part, the risk is low. The molecular structure of the gluten used in beauty products, generally cannot penetrate the skin. So, if you are applying a product onto your skin, and nowhere near your eyes or mouth, and you wash your hands right after, you will most likely not have a reaction. I say “most likely” because the chance still exists depending on your level of sensitivity.

Unfortunately, when it comes to applying beauty products, we tend to get our hands involved so it’s very possible you will touch your eyes or mouth before washing the product off.

There is also the direct risk of ingesting lip products that contain added gluten. That’s a more obvious one.

Another risk factor lies in powders that contain added gluten. You can either breathe them in or they can get in your eyes or mouth.

Now, again, for the most part, the risk is low, but it’s real and it’s there and it depends on your personal sensitivity level.

What are the possible reactions?

Again, it depends on your level of sensitivity. Both those with Celiac disease and those living with Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity could have a reaction to a beauty product containing added gluten. I think it’s up to the individual. Common reactions include:

  • Rashes, skin irritations, hives, and/or redness.
  • Itchy, watery, red and/or puffy eyes.
  • Runny nose and/or congestion.
  • Headache, and/or dizziness.
  • The same, general feeling you get when you ingest gluten.

How can I minimize my chance of having a reaction?

First and foremost, find out the ingredients of the products you are using. If you are unsure, contact the seller or the brand directly and ask them if the ingredients of the product you are interested in, contain gluten.

  1. Read the label and the information available online for the ingredients.
  2. Wash your hands as soon as you have finished applying a product that contains gluten.
  3. Try to avoid powder or aerosol products that contain gluten as you can accidentally inhale them.
  4. Only buy lip products that are gluten-free. Luckily, there are several widely available.

What beauty brands should do better

From our research, we feel that brands hold back from making any definitive statement because they can’t guarantee the condition of the raw product and/or the chance of cross-contamination if products are produced in a shared facility. We get their hesitation, but we are past that now. As gluten-free foodees, we understand ingredients and that there is a risk whenever a label includes the words contains vs may contain

Improve transparency. Take the onus off the customer to investigate. Just as they promote their vegan and/or cruelty-free status, do the same with gluten and it’s time we demand it. Email or call beauty retailers and/or brands and tell them that gluten is a common allergen and there needs to be more transparency when it is present in products. They should include gluten-free in search filters on their site along with other allergens/preferences, so identifying gluten-free products is easier.

What brands are gluten-free?

Due to the growing awareness of gluten sensitivities, many beauty product brands are now adding “gluten-free” to the website and packaging for products that do not contain added gluten. There are some brands that are 100% gluten-free and there are others that are definitely aware of its importance, but are hesitant to commit to saying they are “gluten-free”.

We have reached out to a number of popular brands and have organized their responses below. These responses were captured either via written email exchange, live chat or through information directly from their website. You’ll notice how they vary in their willingness to commit to saying they are 100% gluten-free. That is mainly due to their inability to guarantee the purity of the raw materials used and/or the status of the equipment used. They cannot guarantee that the raw materials and/or equipment did not come in contact with gluten so use caution even with brands that are 100% gluten-free.

This is a good list, but I do have quite a lot of YSL so I am concerned about that one company, as all others have either been sold or trashed. I have learned that looking up individual products isn’t worth my time or money as I am sick of being sick and I used to have acne roseacea, eczema, night sweats, fatigue, brain fog, anxiety and depression. I cut out the gluten for two years and couldn’t figure out what I was missing, until it came to me, it must be my makeup. Although I would say I have trashed at least 1/2 of my makeup, I am left with a decent amount, except my YSL, it is still a mystery to me. My most recent glutening was from eye shadow and mascara, and yes, it does happen. I am so grateful for your blog. Please keep up the great work.

Cheers,
