The Ultimate Gluten-Free Chocolate List

Ultimate Gluten-Free Chocolate List

Chocolate and candy are a quintessential part of Valentineโ€™s Day. However, it can get tricky when you are gluten-free, or buying for someone who is gluten-free, as hidden gluten lurks in many confectionary treats. To help you safely navigate your way through the virtual/in-person chocolate shelves, Iโ€™ve put together this ultimate gluten-free chocolate list.

Adding chocolate to a gift, or using it as a hostess gift is common. This is especially true of Valentineโ€™s Day when thoughts go to flowers and chocolate. If you are looking for non-food gifts, check out this awesome Valentineโ€™s Gift guide or check out any of the other holiday gift guides for inspiration.

Keep in mind, that even with products on the โ€˜safeโ€ list of our ultimate gluten-free chocolate list, if it involves a pretzel, cookie, cake, or another item that is commonly made with wheat/gluten, do not eat it unless it is labelled gluten-free.

Use this list as a guideline; however, you should always read the label to ensure that the product is made gluten-free in your area. Manufacturing formulations can be different between counties and/or can change with special or holiday versions of products. Also, recipes and manufacturing practices can change so it’s always a good idea to check labels.

Remember when reading any food labels (chocolate or otherwise) you want to know the alternative names for gluten, what โ€œmay contain” vs. โ€œcontainsโ€ means. You may even want to use a scanner app to help you decipher if a product is safe. Check out the other tactics and practices to avoid gluten in our Ultimate Gluten-Free Guide for Beginners.

DISCLAIMER: Most of the chocolate on this list is manufactured in facilities or on equipment that is also used to manufacture products containing gluten. Please be sure to determine if it is safe for your own personal consumption.

“Contrary to what some “free from” brands would like you to believe, ALL chocolate is naturally gluten-free and so you have to add an ingredient containing gluten for it to become an issue! Most of our loose fresh chocolates or any of our range of bars, clusters, slabs or novelties made in our chocolate kitchen in Holton Heath do not contain gluten in their recipes. In August 2022 we started working with an oat m!lk chocolate produced in Colombia which is 100% plant-based and gluten-free as it is made with gluten-free oat powder. However, we do work with an oat cream (which the manufacturers Oatly advise is not definitely gluten-free) to make our vegan-friendly caramels & occasionally work with beer (which will be flagged in the chocolate box information), and biscuits to make chocolate biscuit cakes. As we make all our items in our chocolate kitchen, we do flag on all ingredients lists & on packaging that they are made in the same room, so might contain traces. If an item definitely contains gluten, it is flagged on their product page & on their ingredients list on their page on the website.”

ChocXO

Cocomels

โ€œ(The Cocomelโ€™s) entire line of products is made without gluten, egg, dairy, peanuts or tree nuts; however, our caramel is made with coconut milk, which is sometimes classified as a tree nut. Because our products are manufactured on equipment which is also used to process dairy, peanut, egg, wheat and tree nuts, we cannot guarantee they are always 100% free of these allergens. However, we do have an allergen cleanse protocol and testing which is implemented between the production cycles of our products and other products which may contain allergens. This allergen cleanse reduces the potential for cross-contamination on production machinery.โ€

Don’t milky ways have barley in them?

      Hi MH,
You are right, but ” The Milky Way Midnight and Milky Way Caramel do not have gluten containing ingredients such as the malted barley.” that is why are on the list and not the original Milky way.
      Hope this helps.
      Cheers,

Thank you for your sharing this list. I have a very bad Gluten Free intolerance and this really is great for me to know! I found out about my Celiac Disease in the 1970s. It was hard to find anything that tasted like regular food! The companies that are making the Gluten free food that tastes just like the original type, that would be poisonous to me, deserve our gratitude! Thank you too, for making it easier to find the goodies that are gluten free! Bless you!

      Hi Sherry,
I can only imagine how hard it must have been in the 70s. In know it was difficult for me to go gluten-free 8 nearly 9 years ago and I had products to choose from.
You are so welcome. It is why we created the list because knowing which brands ( even if you should should always read the package and double check individual products) saves time and gives you a starting point. We tried to create a list that not only should which brands are labelled gluten-free, but also ones that that just don’t contain gluten for those who are non-celiac gluten sensitive.
Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to comments- check out our holiday lists ( Halloween, Holiday, Valentines, Easter)
      Cheers,
      Elyse

Yikes! My GF staples have been crossed off the list! When I read the ingredients, though, I canโ€™t identify anything with gluten. Is there a reason for the items with the strike-throughs?
E.g. Aero, Peanut M&Ms, Hershey Kisses, Turtles classicโ€ฆ

      Hi Cyd,
The strikethroughs are meaningless. They indicate something is wrong with the link. As long as the product is part on the list itโ€™s safe. Weโ€™re working on fixing all the links.
      Thank you so much.
      Cheers,
      Elyse
