As the holidays approach, many of us will be entertaining guests or bringing a dish to an event. A classic and safe choice is crudités with onion dip. That’s why today, we are sharing the best gluten-free onion dip recipe with you.
Many dips are gluten-free. However, the mixes (which you would mix with sour cream) can contain gluten. Making your own from scratch is surprisingly easy and cost-effective, because you probably have many of these ingredients already in your home, plus the flavour is phenomenal. I first made this dip out of necessity, as I didn’t have the dip I needed. So I had to figure out how to use what I had, at hand to make one. The result is the best gluten-free onion dip recipe, and I’m sure that I will never go back to buying premade dip again.
This is a recipe you will be making year-round, and your friends and family will be begging you to bring “your famous onion dip” to any event they are having.
No matter if you pair this with cudités or gluten-free crackers, this is a winning appetizer. This is a dip you can enjoy at Super Bowl parties, barbecues, and any event all year round. I hope I’ve made you all hungry.
I served this dip with cudités and chicken wings for a fun weekend meal.
Another way to use this dip is to put it on or beside a charcuterie board – tips for making the best gluten-free charcuterie board can be found here.

The Best Gluten-Free Onion Dip Recipe
Ingredients:
- 340g cream chees
- 1 red onion, minced
- 1 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp gluten-free mayonnaise
- 1 tsp gluten-free Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp each of salt and pepper
- 1 tsp granulated garlic
- 2 tsp granulated onion
- 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 c buttermilk (or mix 1/4 c milk with 1 tsp apple cider vinegar to make “buttermilk”)
Directions:
- Mince one medium purple onion.
Tip: You can use a cooking onion or even a shallot, but I like the colour the purple onion gives to the look of the dip.
- In a frypan, melt butter and add purple onion.
- Cook onion, until it is softened, but not browned.
- Remove onion from pan and let cool.
- In a separate bowl, soften the cream cheese by mixing it with the mayonnaise and buttermilk.
Tip: if you do not have buttermilk, add 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to whatever milk you have. I used 2% milk because that’s what I had, in hand and let it sit for five minutes in your measuring cup. This sours the milk which turns it into “buttermilk.”
- To the mayonnaise mixture add salt, pepper, granulated garlic, granulated onion, and 2 tsp apple cider vinegar.
- Mix in your cooled, sautéed purple onion.
- Stir well.
- Taste, and adjust the seasoning to your liking.
- Serve right away, or put it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge.
Tip: Leftovers can be stored in the fridge, to be enjoyed for several days afterwards (if it lasts that long.)
Tip: You can make this dip ahead of time so that the flavours can meld even more.
Tip: If the dip gets too stiff in the fridge, you can loosen it by stirring in a tablespoon of milk before serving.
Enjoy!
