Becoming a Gluten-Free Foodee 101

Welcome to the Gluten-Foodee blog – a blog about living your best gluten-free life.

Becoming a gluten-free foodee and/or maintaining a gluten-free lifestyle can be daunting. We know – we’ve been there. Learning all the alternative sources of gluten and where they are hiding is quite the challenge. It’s a journey we’ve been on for years and we are happy to share what we’ve learned so far. And here – on the Gluten-Free Foodee blog – is where we will be doing that.

So let’s start now. We thought we’d kick it off with a couple of the basics to help get you started and make going gluten-free easier.

Gluten-Free Foodee Tip #1

The first rule of being a gluten-free foodee is to try to incorporate as many whole foods as possible into your diet. Whole gluten-free grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, dairy products, and meats are very important. The less processed the products you eat are, the less chance of there being hidden gluten in them. This will mean more planning, preparation, and cooking in the beginning while you adjust; but we have you covered there too. Our gluten-free recipes are easy to make and contain everyday gluten-free ingredients. We believe in the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, stupid) when it comes to recipes. I also love adopting traditional favourite recipes to gluten-free and when I can accommodate other special dietary needs too, even better.

Being gluten-free doesn’t mean being deprived of your favourite foods or traditional family recipes or compromising the quality or taste of what you eat. Our goal will always remain to make our gluten-free recipes so good, no one will know they are gluten-free.

Gluten-Free Foodee Tip #2

Gluten-free foodee tip #2 is to read every label. That’s right, you really need to read the ingredient list on the label of every product you eat. Yes, in the beginning this does extend the length of your time grocery shopping. If you are unsure of an ingredient, Google it or check out our Alternative Sources of Gluten infographic. Just because you don’t think a product has wheat/flour/gluten in it, doesn’t mean that it isn’t in the product. Hidden gluten is a very real issue, so be careful, and read ever single ingredient. Sauces, chocolate bars, and dressings, can all have hidden gluten in them. Soy sauce (for example) is something you don’t think has gluten, but many brands contain wheat. This is why we don’t take for granted what we “think” is in a product. Since many different products contain soy sauce in them, you need to read the label to know for sure, if that product is ok for your dietary needs.

We will be adding many more tips in the weeks, months, years to come to help make eating a gluten-free diet easier. Along with our gluten-free tips, we will also be sharing our tried and true recipes and gluten-free product reviews. These reviews will help you decide which products are worth your time and money. There are so many gluten-free products out there but they are not all created equal. We promise these reviews will always be based on our personal experience and we will be 100% honest with our opinion. Our reviews will never be influenced for any other reason or purpose than the truth.

So, check back with us often to read our latest recipes, tips and product reviews. We look forward to getting to know – and learning from – our GFF community so we can all live our best gluten-free life together.

Glad I found this article and your site. I was diagnosed w/severe gluten and wheat allergies after anaphylaxis on 4/29. It was a game changer. I thoughf I was doing well with GF foods until I had a 2nd episode 7/30. I have found gluten to be in products I would never think of. I saw it listed on an ice cream label! Recently I bought grated cheese which I thought was safe. Nope. Had “food starch” listed as an ingredient. So important to check and sometimes re-check labels.

Thank you so much. You may want to check out our article on the alternative of names for gluten. I’ve been gluten-free for over six years and I just read every single label. I have a sensitivity, not an allergy, but I still make sure to read about every single thing I’m eating. If you ever have any specific questions or need any help please feel free to reach out. Know that we love hearing from our readers. Thank you again.

If you have a gluten-sensitivity, there is a chance it might mean you’ve (unknowingly) been exposed to gluten. You could review what you’ve eaten (read labels or contact establishments if you have eaten out) but I would recommend you seek medical assistance/advice. We are not qualified to advise you on what is normal for you.

Thank you for reading and we wish you good health.
