We continue our series of gluten-free condiments, gluten-free salsas, pickles, and relishes, and gluten-free BBQ and hot sauces, with this list of East and South East Asian Gluten-Free Sauces. These are those flavour-packed sauces and condiments that are used in some of your favourite East and South East Asian dishes. Unfortunately, extra caution needs to be taken with them if you have gluten (or soy) sensitivities.
The best rule of thumb is to only use sauces that state they are gluten-free on the label. Be careful not to confuse “wheat-free” with “gluten-free” because they are two different classifications. For example, a sauce can have “wheat-free” on the label but the ingredients can still contain “autolyzed yeast extract” which is made from barley and is not gluten-free.
Although we have done preliminary vetting of these brands, we encourage you to READ ALL LABELS. We cannot stress that enough in particular with this list of sauces because recipes can change depending on where the product is manufactured. Also, gluten can sometimes be hidden behind words like:
- autolyzed yeast extract (barley)
- yeast extract (barley)
- Soy Sauce (wheat)
- Caramel (wheat)
